OUR LADY of SORROWS
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI

OUR LADY of SORROWS

Devotion to the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Sorrows has its origins in a prophecy of Simeon, recounted in Luke’s Gospel: And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.

Medieval Christians invented a devotion to seven specific sorrowful events in the Virgin’s life: Simeon’s prophecy, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem, the way of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the descent from the Cross, and the entombment of Jesus.

Here, I depicted the Seven Sorrows on Rosary beads attached the the sword piercing the Virgin’s heart. I calligraphed the words of Simeon’s prophecy around the border in Latin.
