ST. MICHAEL the ARCHANGEL
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI

ST. MICHAEL the ARCHANGEL

This drawing depicts St. Michael the Archangel in his rôle as psychopomp, the guide for departed souls to heaven. It is based on the words sung at offertory in a traditional Requiem Mass:
Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit: deliver them from the lion’s mouth, that Hell swallow them not up, that they fall not into darkness; but let the standard-bearer holy Michael lead them into that holy light which Thou didst promise of old to Abraham and to his seed.
A portion of this is written in Latin on a banderole, in a script inspired by on Slavic calligraphy. St. Michael brandishes a flaming sword; he is feathered and wears a cope with the words QUIS UT DEUS repeating on its border. He stands on a hellmouth represented here as a literal lion’s.
