IHS with CRUCIFIXION
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI
Here I wrote IHS, a traditional abbreviation for the Holy Name Jesus in a lowercase blackletter script. I placed a Crucifixion scene with the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. John the Apostle within the outlines of the letters I and H. The idea for this I got from a paintng by the 15th century Cretan iconographer Andreas Ritzos. The banderole in the letter S has a Latin inscription that means In the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth and under the earth. Around the letters I drew knot and braid ornament in the style of Northumbro-Irish manuscripts.
