MARY, SEAT of WISDOM
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI
The Virgin Mary is called Seat of Wisdom in the Litany of Loreto. This medieval title is also associated with depictions of the Virgin holding the Christ Child on her lap. Here, I drew her seated on a throne with decorative lion carvings; this suggests the Throne of Solomon. She and Jesus study together a book. In the border is the Latin title Sedes Sapientiæ, and a passage from the Book of Proverbs: Wisdom hath built herself a house, she hath hewn her out seven pillars. The seven pillars appear behind the throne.
The print is based on my ink drawings. It is about one and a half times larger than the originals.
Dimensions: 8" × 11"
