ST. PAUL the APOSTLE
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI
This drawing depicts the Apostle Paul holding a book, representing his many New Testament writings, and a sword, the means of his martyrdom. According to his traditional hagiography, when Paul was beheaded under the orders of Nero, his head bounced bounced twice; in each of the three places where it struck the ground, a fountain sprang up miraculously. My drawing includes the three springs, a chopping block, and a medieval executioner’s sword. Behind the Apostle are miniature depcitions of seven cities to which he addressed epistles: Rome, Corinth, Ephesus, Galatia, Philippi, Colossæ, and Thessalonica. Shields in the upper corners include his name, and an emblem representing the miracle of the serpent of Melita, described in Acts 28.
The print is based on my ink drawings. It is about one and a half times larger than the originals.
Dimensions: 8" × 11"
