This is a calligraphic manuscript of the end of the Gospel of Luke (describing the Ascension of Jesus Christ), and the beginning of the Gospel of John (describing the Incarnation of the Word), written in parallel columns in Greek, Latin, and English. I wrote the text by hand in black ink, in a script I invented based on various early medieval uncials.
The ornamental borders I based on decoration in the architecture of Hagia Sophia, which were reproduced in Owen Jones’s The Grammar of Ornament. To the acanthus leaves, grapevines, and eagles, I added some of my own motifs, including peacocks and teasels. The borders include Cross and flower emblems, and monograms of Alpha and Omega, Chi and Rho, and ICXC NIKA (a Greek abbreviation for Jesus Christ conquers).
I also drew miniature images of the Ascension of Jesus Christ, His Nativity, and the winged ox and eagle representing the Evangelists Luke and John.
The bottom edge of the goatskin is irregular, as it includes the part of the parchment that was nailed to a frame when it was stretched and scraped.
