CRUCIFIX with AMERICAN SAINTS DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI
This drawing, commissioned by an American archdiocese, depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ with four holy men who were active at some time in the United States. Blessed Solanus Casey, a Capuchin friar known as a healer and worker of miracles, holds the violin that he loved to play. Venerable Frederic Baraga, a Slovenian-born bishop and missionary to Native Americans, holds an Ojibway snowshoe; Baraga was known as the snowshoe priest for traveling great distances on snowshoe during his ministry. Blessed James Miller, a Brother of the Christian Schools who was assassinated in Guatemala, holds a wrench; he was an excellent handyman. Venerable Fulton Sheen holds a piece of chalk, which he used to write on a blackboard in his well-known television programs.
The surrounding decoration, in a frame of Gothic tracery, includes frogs, lakeweed, creeper vines, and stars.
