In 2010, I received a commission to draw St. Michael in the style of an ukiyo-e print. This was the first of many drawings I have made depicting Christian religious subjects in the style of traditional Japanese art.
Over the years, I have revisited this composition several times. St. Michael the Archangel, brandishing a sword and wearing the armor of a samurai, fights the dragon Lucifer, who falls like lightning from heaven. In this, the most recent version, I depicted the body of Lucifer as a giant tentacle. Other demons, in various monstrous shapes, appear falling in silhouette in the background. The angel’s clothing has the Latin words QUIS UT DEUS (Who is like unto God, the meaning of the name Michael) worked into its patterns in orthogonal letters.
Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, especially those of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, strongly influenced the style and composition of this drawing. The inscription says Saint Michael the Archangel in classical Japanese.
