OUR LADY of the ATONEMENT
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI

OUR LADY of the ATONEMENT

Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Our Lady of the Atonement was initiated in the early 20th century by Rev. Paul Wattson and Mother Lurana White, the founders of the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement. In Wattson’s writings, the title is associated with the prophecy of Simeon, and the Virgin’s standing at the foot of the Cross.

The Friars and Sisters, which had been established first within the Episcopal Church, were received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1909. Devotion to Our Lady of the Atonement was recognized by Benedict XV ten years later, with a feast established on the ninth day of July.

In the standard iconography of Mary under this title, she wears a red mantle with a blue garment underneath. In her arms is the Christ child, who wears a white garment with gold borders, and holds a cross in one hand. Both of them have crowns or halos.

I drew this as an approximately half-length portrait, like an icon, taking inspiration from 15th century paintings, including one by Sano di Pietro. To make clear the link between the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and the Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross, I included small scenes in the border of the Presentation in the Temple and the Crucifixion, with emblems of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts.

I wrote the title Domina Nostra Adunationis around the border of Maryn’s halo. Encircling the figures are the Latin words of Romans 5.11, which mean: We joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

The green pattern behind the figures includes vines, fleury crosses, and the Greek nomina sacra ΙΣΧΣ and ΜΡΘΥ, which abbreviate Jesus Christ and Mother of God, respectively. The brown millefleur pattern includes various plants and animals. The bottom of the drawing is irregular; this is where the edge where the goatskin parchment was stretched.
