The clock at the bottom of the bell tower of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena's Piazza del Campo is handsome but unspectacular; however, a panel painted by Sano di Pietro in 1445 (depicting St. Bernardine of Siena preaching) shows that a more elaborate astronomical clock was once in its place.
