This is one of several drawings I have made depicting Christian religious subjects in the style of traditional Japanese art. It depicts St. Raphael the Archangel, holding his traditional attributes: a fish and a staff. 19th century woodblock prints by Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi and Hiroshige informed its composition.
The decorative outer border contains cranes, cliffs, ocean waves and carp.
