ST. NICASIUS
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI
St. Nicasius was a 12th century Knight Hospitaller who was captured at the Siege of Acre and beheaded. I drew him in armor and the tunic of his order, holding a battle standard and a palm of martyrdom. The scimitars in his halo refer to his manner of death.
In the ornamental border I drew caper plants and wrote the saint’s name in a blackletter script.
Medium: Drawing, color ink on calfskin vellum
