This broadside of St. Albert measures 7" × 10". It is based on one of my ink drawings on paper. A scan of this drawing, slightly enlarged and modified, was used to create the plate for letterpress printing.
St. Albert the Great was a 13th century Dominican friar, bishop, philosopher and natural scientist. I drew the saint seated at his desk, writing, surrounded by his books, bottles, instruments of calculation and devotional objects.
The ornamental border surrounding the central image was inspired by the borders in the Sherborne Missal, a 14th century illuminated manuscript. It contains flowering vines, tiny plants and animals, a Gothic monstrance holding an image of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, the arms of the Order of Preachers in a quatrefoil, and the saint’s family arms on a shield. In the bas-de-page I illustrated an old story told of St. Albert: he spent decades inventing a mechanical head that answered questions posed to it. St. Thomas Aquinas, either annoyed or frightened by the automaton, smashed it to pieces.
Approximately 200 broadsides were made in 2015 and issued in an open edition. They were printed on a Heidelberg cylinder press at Rohner Letterpress (Chicago, IL). Graphic Chemical & Ink (Villa Park, IL) supplied a traditional printing ink made from linseed oil & furnace black. The paper is text-weight Reich Savoy, which is 100% cotton and archival.
The print costs $26. You may use the button below to pay via PayPal, debit card or credit card. Be sure to confirm the shipping address. I can color this broadside by hand, using pigment-based calligraphers’ inks applied with brushes. I use 23k gold leaf and palladium leaf for the illuminated details. Please note that the brilliance of the leaf does not show well in the scanned image. Each hand-colored print is unique. The one you receive will not be identical to the one shown here.
The hand-colored print with illuminated details costs $426. You may use the button below to pay via PayPal, debit card or credit card. Be sure to confirm the shipping address.
