Daniel Mitsui  ~  Religious Drawings  ~  Baptism of Christ

This is an ink drawing on a 4" × 6" piece of Bristol board. I drew it using fine-tipped pens; calligraphers’ inks applied with brushes; and brass leaf.

The original was created on private commission.

Both Byzantine and late medieval Northern European paintings inspired the composition. Christ is depicted waist-deep in the River Jordan; above him is a dove representing the Holy Ghost, and at the top of the drawing is the blessing hand of God the Father. John the Baptist and an angel holding a towel stand on the banks.

The text is from the third chapter of the Book of Matthew:
Ecce vox de caelis dicens: Hic est Filius meus dilectus.

Behold, a voice from heaven saying: This is my beloved Son.
I wrote it in a medieval textura quadrata script in black and red ink.

An open-edition giclée print of this drawing is available for $23. You may use the button below to pay via PayPal, debit card or credit card. Be sure to confirm the shipping address.
