BAPTISM of JESUS CHRIST
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI
Both Byzantine and late medieval Northern European paintings inspired the composition. Christ is depicted waist-deep in the River Jordan; above him is a dove representing the Holy Ghost, and at the top of the drawing is the blessing hand of God the Father. John the Baptist and an angel holding a towel stand on the banks.
The text is from the third chapter of the Book of Matthew:
Ecce vox de caelis dicens: Hic est Filius meus dilectus.
I wrote it in a medieval textura quadrata script in black and red ink.
Behold, a voice from heaven saying: This is my beloved Son.
Medium: Drawing, color ink on Bristol board with brass leaf
Dimensions: 4" × 6"
I drew this for a gift to my godson.
